Literacy & Numeracy

At Caritas College we prioritise literacy and numeracy as fundamentals of learning.

As first educators of children/young people, families have a significant role in the ongoing learning of their child. In partnership with families, teachers at Caritas College aim to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes for all students.

Teachers at Caritas College:

  • use a range of strategies to explicitly teach literacy and numeracy skills across all learning areas
  • use a range of literacy and numeracy education practices
  • analyse data (eg from NAPLAN, PAT Reading & Mathematics and other assessments) to further inform teaching practices and to support student improvement.

InitiaLit Literacy Program

The InitiaLit Program was introduced across Reception to Year 2 in 2022.  InitiaLit is a whole class literacy program, developed by an organisation called MultiLit.

InitiaLit explicitly teaches students to read, write and spell by actively teaching the relationship between sounds and letters, through research and evidence-based practises.  Students are introduced to sounds and letters in a sequential order which builds in complexity.  InitiaLit's focus on the relationship between sounds and letters allows students to grow their knowledge of words.
